Welcome to Housing Charlotte 2007, an initiative to find new solutions to address Charlotte's growing affordable housing problem.  

We’ve moved into the second phase in which the Implementation Committee will further develop, refine and implement the recommendations coming out of the Housing Charlotte 2007 Affordable Housing Forum held February 22, 2007.  

The Implementation Committee consists of individuals with business, neighborhood and/or non-profit backgrounds who will help address this growing and important issue in our community. 

The committee will examine the following five solution areas coming out of the forum:

The Charlotte City Council and the Housing Charlotte 2007 Planning Committee want to thank the more than 400 participants that contributed to the February 22, 2007 event. The one-day event produced a trove of recommendations to preserve and increase the housing in Charlotte. Click here for the Proceedings Report and the Implementing Solutions document.
 

Charlotte has an affordable housing problem. Many lower income residents in this community find it difficult to obtain a safe and decent place that they can afford on their income.  A rule of thumb is that a household should pay no more than 30 percent of their income for rent and utilities or a mortgage and other housing costs.* One measure of the problem is there are over 12,500 rental units needed by 2010 to serve those in Charlotte who earn the lowest income. **

Affordable housing is a problem that touches every one of us on a daily basis. When we purchase an item in the store, require assistance by a medical technician in our doctor's office or pick up our children from daycare, we may come face to face with a Charlottean who is having difficulty finding a safe, decent and affordable place to live.

This is an issue not only for the individual without housing but also for our local economy. The City of Charlotte needs workers at all levels to keep the economic engine running. Our local economy cannot remain strong if the City cannot adequately house its workforce.
