Douglas R. Porter, FAICP
President, The Growth Management Institute

Douglas R. Porter is one of the nation's leading authorities on managing community and regional growth. In consulting and writing, and through the nonprofit Growth Management Institute he founded in 1992, he conducts research and engages in educational activities to improve the policy and practice of growth management. His work spans the spectrum from affordable housing Program to transportation/land use relationships, regional growth management, transit-oriented development, and local community development issues.

On the subject of affordable housing, he wrote Inclusionary Zoning for Affordable Housing (published by ULI); a briefer version was published by the Brookings Institution. He has presented his findings for the Atlanta ULI District Council and in Charleston, SC and New York City. He also worked closely with Chicago-area cities to promote inclusionary zoning.

From 1979 to 1991, Porter directed the public policy research program of the Urban Land Institute. His recent publications include Smart Growth Endorsement/Rating Systems (APA), Breaking the Logjam: Civic Engagement by Developers and Planners (ULI), Developing Around Transit (chapter on suburban TOD's) (ULI), Making Smart Growth Work (ULI), and The Practice of Sustainable Development (ULI). He is an AICP Fellow and a former ULI Fellow, and received a B.S. and M.S. in Urban and Regional Planning from Michigan State University and the University of Illinois, respectively.
